ইংরেজি বাক্য গঠন: চার ধরনের বাক্য

আমরা আগের পোস্টে জেনেছি যে বিষয়বস্তু, অভিপ্রায় এবং আবেগের দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে ইংরেজি বাক্যগুলিকে চারটি প্রধান ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়: Declarative or Assertive, Interrogative, Imperative and Exclamatory. আমরা clause এবং phrase সম্পর্কেও শিখেছি।

আবার, কাঠামোগত দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে, অনেক অন্যান্য ভাষার মত ইংরেজি বাক্যগুলিকেও তিনটি ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়। কি ধরনের clause, তাদের সংখ্যা, এবং কিভাবে একে অপরের সাথে যুক্ত, এসবের  উপর ভিত্তি করে  Simple, Compound, Complex sentences শ্রেনীভুক্ত করা রয়েছে। কেবল তাই নয়, অনেক ব্যাকরণবিদ  Compound-Complex নামে চতুর্থ ধরনের বাক্যও স্বীকার করেন।

Simple Sentences (সরল বাক্য)

আসুন আমরা নিম্নলিখিত বাক্যগুলি পরীক্ষা করি;

The Sun rises in the east.

Sam is our neighbour.

Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal.

যেমন কি আমরা দেখতে পাচ্ছি, উপরের বাক্যগুলির প্রত্যেকটি একটি subject এবং একটি predicate দিয়ে তৈরি। প্রতিটি বাক্যের মধ্যে আমরা শুধুমাত্র একটি main clause দেখতে পাই। এগুলি Simple Sentences বলে পরিচিত।

যখন কোন বাক্যের মধ্যে একটি subject এবং একটি predicate থাকে, অর্থাৎ বাক্যটি শুধুমাত্র একটি clause দিয়ে  তৈরি, আমরা তাকে Simple Sentence  (সহজ বাক্য) বলি।  Simple Sentences-এর  আরও উদাহরণ হল:

Aruna is my sister.

She studies in class ten.

Our ancestral house is on a river bank.

Simple sentence-এর মধ্যে এক বা একাধিক phrases থাকতে পারে। উপরোক্ত উদাহরণগুলিতে, in the east, the capital of Nepal, in class ten, our ancestral house, on a river bank, এগুলি সব বাক্যাংশ।

Compound Sentences (যৌগিক বাক্য)

এবার, নিম্নলিখিত বাক্যটি পরীক্ষা করা যাক।

Aruna is my sister and she is ten years old.

উপরের বাক্যটি দুটি clause তৈরি করা হয়েছে: Aruna is my sister এবং she is ten years old.

Aruna is my sister, এই শব্দসমূহ একটি ধারণা প্রকাশ করে যা অন্য কিছুর সাহায্য বিনাই একটি সম্পূর্ণ মনোভাব প্রদান করে; সুতরাং, এটি একটি independent  বা main clause এবং একটি সম্পূর্ণ বাক্য। একই ভাবে, she is ten years old এটিও একটি independent  বা main clause । উভয় main clause দুটি and এই শব্দটি দ্বারা সংযুক্ত করা হয়েছে , যা coordinating conjunction হিসাবে পরিচিত। But, or, either or, neither nor, এগুলি আরো কিছু coordinating conjunctions যা আমরা সাধারণত ব্যবহার করি।

উপরের বাক্যটি compound sentence-এর একটি উদাহরণ। কিছু অন্যান্য উদাহরণ নিম্নপ্রকার:

Aruna studies in class ten and she is a good student. (দুটি independent clauses, যেগুলি coordinating conjunction, and, দিয়ে যুক্ত করা।)

Sam is our neighbour but we rarely see him. (দুটি independent clauses, যেগুলি coordinating conjunction, but, দিয়ে যুক্ত করা।.)

We leave right now or we will miss the train. (দুটি independent clauses, যেগুলি coordinating conjunction, or, দিয়ে যুক্ত করা।.)

The sky is clear and the beach is clean but I forgot my swimming gear. (তিনটি independent clauses, যেগুলি coordinating conjunction, and এবং but, দিয়ে যুক্ত করা।)

যখন একটি বাক্য দুই বা ততোধিক independent  বা main clause দিয়ে গঠিত হয়, তখন আমরা তাকে একটি Compound sentence (যৌগিক বাক্য) বলি।

Complex Sentences (জটিল বাক্য)

এবার, আমরা নিম্নলিখিত বাক্যটি পরীক্ষা করব।

We ran home when the rains started.

উপরের বাক্যটি দুটি clause, main  এবং subordinate, দিয়ে গঠিত। We ran home, এটা main clause এবং when the rains started  এটা  subordinate clause; এটি একটি complex  sentence.

Complex sentences অন্য কিছু উদাহরণ হল:

The police removed the barricade as the crowd became restive. (The police removed the barricade এটা main clause এবং as the crowd became restive – subordinate clause.)

The manager was relieved when the workers who were on strike resumed work. (The manager was relieved এটা main clause, এবং when the workers resumed work ও who were on strike এগুলি subordinate clauses.)

যখন কোন বাক্য একটি main clause এবং এক বা একাধিক subordinate clause দ্বারা গঠিত হয়, আমরা তাকে Complex Sentence (জটিল বাক্য)বলি।

Compound - Complex Sentences (যৌগিক - জটিল বাক্য)

আমরা আগে দেখেছি যে একটি compound sentence দুটি independent clause দিয়ে গঠিত হয় ও একটি coordinating conjunction দিয়ে যুক্ত হয়। কিন্তু, অনেক সময় সংযুক্ত বাক্যগুলির মধ্যে independent clause  ছাড়া   subordinate clause-ও থাকতে পারে। উদাহরণ স্বরূপ,

Aruna searched for the keys and I told her that Sam has them.

উপরের বাক্যটি দুটি independent clause-এর সমন্বয়ে তৈরি: Aruna searched for the keys এবং I told her that Sam has them.

উল্লেখযোগ্য, that Sam has them একটি subordinate clause এবং I told her that Sam has them এই independent clause-টির অংশ।

উপরের বাক্যটি, Aruna searched for the keys and I told her that Sam has them, একটি Compound – Complex sentence. সুতরাং, একটি বাক্য যা অন্তত দুটি independent clause এবং কমপক্ষে একটি subordinate clause দিয়ে, তাকে আমরা Compound – Complex sentence বলি।
